3 R’s of People and Relationships

3 R's of People and Relationships

People and relationships are a part of life. We come in contact with people each and every day of our lives. While driving in our cars, walking to get to one place or another, purchasing items from the store, while at work, we will come in contact with people. Take a few minutes out of your day to do some casual people watching. You will observe many, many things, guaranteed, including 3 “R’s of people and relationships, which we will discuss a little later.

One particular place you will most certainly come in contact with people is your local exercise facility, or what us common folk call a gym. People and relationships many times are re-kindled, or created at the gym.
While at the gym one day, one particular individual came up to me in the middle of my workout.

This particular individual walked up to me and stated the following: “Do you still work at the jail?” I replied, “No, I don’t, I left in June of 2017.” This individual, after my telling him this went on to state the following: “It may not be worth much, but when I was in jail 12 years ago, you were one of the most fair officers at the jail.” When this individual finished saying the aforementioned, I was initially at a loss for words, but I mustered enough words to simply reply, “Thank you.” This individual went on to state that the brief jail stay he had really changed his life for the better.

This individual was a manager at a local business and stated that now he was in the role of overseeing people. It was obvious this individual gained a greater value of people and relationships, and understood the 3 “R’s” of people and relationships.

This next point I’m about to make is a rather simple point, but a very relevant point, as it relates to people. This point, simply put is, you never know who’s watching! Did you catch that? In our daily lives, the people we come in contact with, regardless of whether or not we know them are watching us, and watching how we conduct ourselves will greatly enhance our standing with people, and help us further cultivate relationships.

I want to write this short piece to provide 3 “R’s” to keep in mind each day, as it relates to people and relationships. In Church Administration, people are the most important resource of any church or ministry! These points are relevant if work in a factory, a facility, or in a family business, or a church or ministry. People and relationships are key, and treating people properly will carry you a long way and many times affect future encounters with others. Please keep these 3 “R’s” of people and relationships in mind:

Respect reigns

This is the first of the 3 “R’s” of people and relationships. Dr. George Thompson, the founder of the Verbal Judo Institute stated the following regarding respect: “Everyone, regardless of race, socioeconomic status, or gender deserves to be treated with respect.” No matter who you come in contact with, no matter where you come in contact with them, people should be respected each and every time. Aretha Franklin wrote a song called “Respect,” and small part of this song states, “R-E-S-P-E-C-T, find out what it means to me.” Remember respect means a lot to everyone…..respect reigns. Don’t become complacent in the area of respect, be sure to make respect a top priority.

Remember reciprocity

The act of reciprocity goes a long way in life therefore, if you treat others right, right treatment will come back to you. If you love your wife properly, she’ll love you properly. Simply put, how you treat others will be returned to you. On the flip side, if you treat others in disrespectful ways on a regular basis, disrespect will come knocking at your door. You can call it karma, you can call it getting what you deserve, but always remember to reciprocate what it is that you are requesting, believe me, it works!

Remain Real

The saying, “Keeping it Real” has many meanings. Always be sure to remain true to who you are. When you are true to who you are, many people will recognize this, and will be able to see this for themselves. Remaining real will help to foster, develop and maintain relationships. Remaining real will ensure you are able to reciprocate, and will help you remember that respect reigns. Keep in mind others are always watching us and how we conduct ourselves as ministry assistants. People are the lifeblood of any church and ministry. Treating people properly and with respect each
time will be remembered and will affect ALL of your future encounters with them. Do you want peaceful conversations, or parasitic confrontations?

The choice is up to you…….respect reigns, but you must remember reciprocity, and remain real. Be relational, and keep in mind the significance of everyone you come in contact with while you are serving. You are Not a Glorified Janitor!!!!

by Cavell Samuels | Leave a Comment

You are not a glorified janitor

Recently, while listening to a well-known Pastor in the Body of Christ, I heard Deacons referred to in a way I found to be quite discrediting to all who serve as Deacons. This well-known Pastor referred to Deacons as “Glorified Janitors.” When I first heard this, I could not believe what I was hearing. I then went back a little bit on the video, and the same words, “Glorified Janitor” was stated again! In our work (Yes, I am a Deacon) we are often called upon for many tasks and assignments. One thing we must keep in mind is we are first of all servants of the Lord Jesus Christ! Matthew 16:24 puts it this way:

“Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.”

You are not a glorified janitor, you are a called servant as a Deacon!

This post is written with the intention of encouraging those who have been appointed by God to serve those who are in their respective local churches and the Body of Christ as a whole as Deacons. Acts 6:3-“Wherefore brethren look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business.” In this scripture, the words “Honest” sticks out. This word, in this context of scripture, outlines one who is not a novice in their walk with the Lord Jesus Christ, but one who is firm, and built up by the words of scripture, not one who is foolish. Proverbs 1:7-“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” Deacons are those who are to display the knowledge of the Lord in what they do.

Deacons, although not the only part of our local churches are a vital part of our local churches. As encouragers, defenders of the faith, teachers, and willing workers, Deacons are a picture of personal sacrifice and consistent effort. My father, who is also a Deacon, once said to me that if your work is not hard as a Deacon, you are not doing this work right. In this, he was saying that many times, when operating in your own power and strength, you would like to take the easy road and the road that is broad. As a Deacon, although tempting, you do not take the easy road……instead, you take the straight and narrow way! Matthew 7:13-14 reads:

“Enter ye in the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.”

We at Kingdom First Consulting know the awesome responsibility that Deacons carry. We are here to aid and assist your church or ministry to effectively train and develop Deacons and potential Deacons in your ministry. Remember, at Kingdom First, we are “Building King-Sized Skills for King-Sized Visions!” To our Deacons in the body of Christ, stay strong, and stay standing! Your labor is not in vain!

3 Ways Complacency Kills

by Cavell Samuels | Leave a Comment

I have experience in working in law enforcement. One chief thing which is communicated to law enforcement officers is to never, ever become complacent! By definition, being complacent means: (1)-Showing smug, or uncritical satisfaction with oneself or one’s achievement. Synonyms of complacent include smug, self-satisfying, self-congratulatory, proud, gloating and triumphant. Based on the definition, and the synonyms, one would be in a world of trouble if they took for granted that everything is going to go according to the procedure and program every single time they came in contact with someone, especially in a law enforcement context. In essence, complacency kills!

This article is not dealing with law enforcement, but I am going to relate complacency to our work as ministry assistants, executive assistants, administrators and those who engage in the administrative work of churches and ministries. We who work on the administrative side of churches and ministries can never become too satisfied with our respective achievements! One of the first concepts of salvation and coming after Christ is self-denial, which is in direct opposition to complacency!

Matthew 16:24 – “Then Jesus said unto his disciples, ‘If any man will come after me, let him DENY himself TAKE UP HIS CROSS and FOLLOW ME.’”

Denying, taking up and following scream the exact opposite of self-satisfying, proud, gloating and self-congratulations! If we who are engaged in the work of administration take this complacent attitude on and embrace this attitude, we are leading toward death…..spiritual death most importantly, but also death in our respective assignment, and death in our calling to be aids and assistants to our respective churches and ministries. There are 3 ways complacency kills. I will briefly share these 3 ways below:

1. Complacency stops advancement – Philippians 3:14 reads: “I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.” In this, when we are pressing, this is a continual work toward the higher calling of God! If we feel we have “Arrived” our likelihood to press grows more and slimmer. Our communities, cities, and world, in general, cannot afford for us to stop advancing the mission, mandate, and message of Jesus Christ. We who engage in the administrative work of the ministry must continue to press because if we do not press, we do not advance!

2. Complacency steals desire – In the greeting seen in 3 John 1:2, there is a wish or desire that is stated in the form of a greeting: “Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper, and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.” In this verse, an overall desire for those who are reading these words is evident. When we become complacent, we only wish well for ourselves, not those around us. But we, who are called to do what is that we do administratively cannot operate with ourselves in the forefront. We must aim to perfect, engage in the work of the ministry for, and edify those we serve! (Ephesians 4:11-12). When complacency comes into the picture, the desire to satisfy ourselves will become foremost, versus us serving, building and encouraging those who we have been assigned to serve in our respective churches and ministries.

3. Complacency starts mediocrity – The cousin of complacency is mediocrity. We get lulled into a relaxed state, and a false confidence when we become complacent in our work and our administrative duties. Scripture indicates, however, that the God we serve is excellent! We, as servants working in the administrative capacity, should desire to display the excellence of God in all we do! Psalm 8:1-“Oh Lord, our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth, who hath set thy glory above the heavens.” One way to guard against mediocrity and complacency is to keep in mind the excellent standard God has and the excellent sacrifice made on Calvary to pardon us from the penalty of sin we so deserve!

We at Kingdom First Consulting aim to assist churches and ministries build “King-Sized Skills for King-Sized Visions!” One way we do this is by providing administrative training for churches and ministries which will combat and counteract complacency. For more information, please click here. Complacency kills any well-meaning church or ministry. Let’s not be complacent, but let’s concentrate on fulfilling our God-given assignment and our respective church and ministry’s mission and vision!

Being Thankful and Thoughtful

by Cavell Samuels | Leave a Comment

being-thankful-and-thoughtful

As we exit this Thanksgiving season and prepare for the Christmas season, we indeed have plenty to be thankful for! Life, activity of our limbs, the ability to read this post…..I could go on, but I think you get the point. Being thankful not only is limited to November, but should be extended to each and every day we are granted. From being thankful, we next can move to being thoughtful! Thinking, contemplating, planning, processing, and producing play a role in all of our lives. Regardless of the role, function, and position we are privileged to have, we may from time to time need some pieces of information to motivate, guide and navigate our various paths we have been appointed to travel.
